The power of social proof

Have you ever walked past a restaurant with a massive queue outside and thought “wow, that must be a great place to eat”.

There is clearly something worth waiting for inside those doors. And so more people join the queue.

The restaurant next door has no queue at all. It must be terrible right?

Clearly, if it was worth visiting, there would be a queue there too.

The reality is, it doesn’t really matter. The queue is there and that’s that. The demand has been proven.

That is social proof.

So it begs the question, can we do the same thing with our music?

We think you can.

Have you ever noticed when an artist you follow releases a song and then for the next 24 hours their Instagram story is an onslaught of repost from other people saying how much they love it?

After seeing enough of them, you finally cave in and think “Right, what is all the fuss about?

And so you join the crowd of people listening to that song.

Added Bonus: You also go into it with your opinion tilted in favour of enjoying the track since everyone else is.

The message here is; it’s all about the buzz you can create. Encourage your followers to repost your release on their story or wherever you want to draw attention and then 100% follow up by reposting it.

Is it easier said than done? Sure. But it’s certainly something to think about when you next release a track… “how can I create social proof that my song is worth listening to?”
